Pieter Brueghel the Younger was part of an incredibly talented dynasty of Flemish Brueghels. He was the oldest son of the 16th-century artist Pieter Brueghel the Elder (known as the Peasant Brueghel). When he was only five years old, his father died, and when his mother died 12 years later, he and his siblings went to live with their grandmother Mayken Verhulst.
Widowed by another famous Flemish artist, Mayken was an accomplished artist in her own right. She had a significant influence on the young Brueghel's. She taught them incredible attention to detail, as she was famous for her miniature paintings. The family moved to Antwerp in 1578, and young Pieter began to study art in earnest at one of the famous studios. A few years later, he opened his own studio and began producing original pieces and copies of his late father's work, both for local sale and export. His studio was successful, and he had several famous students.
Still, he was a victim of the artist's curse. He is known for his landscapes, religious subjects, paintings of famous proverbs, and village scenes.
The images are bold and bright and always full of rich colors. His characters are always vibrant and exciting, with great attention to detail and very conscious thought given to the composition of the peasants.
This influence is likely adapted from his grandmother's style. Today, Pieter the Younger's works are held in the collections of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Louvre Museum in Paris, among others.
