Every Holiday Season, we regale the kids with stories of Santa and his sleigh, his magical reindeer, his elven helpers (immortalized in the movie Elf), and his home at the North Pole, but where do these stories come from? Santa's move to the North Pole is mainly attributed to Thomas Nast, the famous American cartoonist. He submitted many Christmas drawings to Harper's Weekly magazine between 1863 and 1886, and one featured a village called Santa Claussville, N. Nast is also primarily responsible for the current round and jolly physical appearance of Santa that we have grown to love. He depicted him that way in one of his most famous magazine covers.
Elves, as we think of them today, were shaped mainly by Scandinavian writers of the 1800s. Commonly referred to as "House Gnomes" (think Dobby in Harry Potter), they already had a reputation for singling out naughty or nice people and would treat them accordingly.Sort of an early version of Trick or Treat. They were also associated with story-telling, magic, and fantasy, so it made sense to weave them into the Christmas stories. Although they were still viewed as mischievous creatures in many tales, the stories around them shifted to position them as Santa's little helpers.
