The siege lasted about 10 hours and effectively destroyed the Algerian fleet which, in turn, freed over 1000 Christian slaves. The British commander Admiral Lord Exmouth delivered a peace treaty and demanded that the Algerians sign or the bombardment would continue. According to historical records, the fleet had already fired off all of their ammunition. Their threat notwithstanding, no further bombardment would have been possible.
