The jigsaw is entitled'The British Sovereigns from William the Conqueror to William the Fourth'. The puzzle was made c. 1830 by William Darton and Sons, a London publishing house specialising in children's books, puzzles and maps. This'dissected puzzle' is formed of thirty five sections of solid mahogany backed with paper. Each piece is faced with paper with printed details of each monarch accompanied with a handcoloured portrait.
The puzzle is solved when they are correctly arranged in chronological order. The final monarch William IV (reigning at the time this puzzle was made) has the following written under his portrait:'Long life and happiness to him and prosperity to his people'. Accompanying the puzzle is the original key, also handcoloured and with matching biographical information to each monarch. Jigsaw puzzles from this period are rare.
The fact that the original'key' to solving the puzzle still exists with this jigsaw makes this an extremely rare if not unique combination. This can be seen in the final two images. The puzzle is housed within a recessed hardboard panel of fairly recent manufacture. The original makers label printed with'Darton London Warranted' is adhered to its lower margin.Dimensions of the hardboard frame: 45.5 cm by 38cm. Dimensions of the completed jigsaw: 39cm by 32.5cm.
