Offered is a distinctive and collectible HUGE 9000 piece jig saw puzzle Bombardment of Algiers Based on a painting in the Maritime National Museum in Greenwich, London The bombardment of Algiers took place in 1816 as a fleet of about 28 British and Dutch ships engaged the Dey Of Algiers (what we would call a governor) in an attempt to end slavery. The siege lasted about 10 hours and effectively destroyed the Algerian fleet which, in turn, freed over 1000 Christian slaves. The British commander Admiral Lord Exmouth delivered a peace treaty and demanded that the Algerians sign or the bombardment would continue. According to historical records, the fleet had already fired off all of their ammunition. Their threat notwithstanding, no further bombardment would have been possible."Fun" and "Learning" do not have to be mutually exclusive. This is something for the serious puzzler. Due to its size we definitely recommend a dedicated work area.
